5 reasons why your small company is great



For a starting entrepreneur mostly working by yourself it is sometimes all too easy to feel insignificant. I must admit I every now and again feel like that. If this happens I remind myself of something Anita Roddick, the late founder of The Body Shop, once said: “If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito”

Think about it: is “big” a guarantee for making an impact and achieving goals; whatever they may be? I don’t think so and my thoughts are backed by 2012 economic facts & figures that were brought to my attention by Dutch Secretary General of Economic Affairs mr Chris Buijink.

In terms of surface The Netherlands only comes at 133rd on the worldwide list. If you compare this to the fact this “small” country globally manages to develop the 16th largest economy or 6th in Europe, then I believe I have a right to say: “great”!

These figures clearly point out that there is no need be big in size to be a significant player.  How is this important to you as an entrepreneur? In what way can you make a great impact while being small in size?

In order to do that it is paramount to understand your strengths. Ask yourself what are the strengths of your business? Why should your prospects, choose to do business with you? Of course I cannot answer these questions for your specific business.

5 advantages that your small company has

What I did nevertheless find out on my own path as a start-up is that there are several benefits to being small rather than big that will appeal to most (prospective) customers.  The mosquito explains:

  1. For your one-man business it is easier to build strong and lasting relationships with customers because you can make your business personal and really make a commitment
  2. Small companies can respond flexibly to their customers’ needs because there are no complicated processes for getting a business offer or a product changed
  3. Small companies often exist because of their inventiveness and innovative ideas. Think about fore mentioned Anita Roddick who set up The Body Shop developing environmentally friendly cosmetics and novelty, but unsophisticated, packaging. Try to get this approved in any big company with a chain of command to battle your way through. Even if you would succeed; it would take you months
  4. Particularly one-man businesses tend to have low overhead. Looking at my own situation; I work from my own study and therefore have no extra costs for renting and heating business accommodation. This results to a lower price for your product or service
  5. Many small companies have a huge external network. Why? Because that’s what they depend on to sell their product or service. People working in bigger companies have to spend a significant amount of their time within the company. In general small business owners are not afraid to share their network with others.

Therefore your customers gain more than just access to you and your product if they do business with you. These are just a few reasons as to why small businesses have a headstart to bigger companies.

Now connect these benefits with your unique strengths in your industry. Then dream big because according to former American football player and coach Bill McCartney
