Confirmed: Angry Birds movie hits box office in 2016
11 Dec, 2012
Angry Birds confirmed today that it will release a movie in the summer of 2016. John Cohen will produce, David Maisel (Iron Man) is executive producer. And because Rovio does things their way, instead of partnering up with – say – Disney, Rovio will make and finance the film itself.
Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said in a statement: “With John’s hands-on producer background and David´s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system.”
David Maisel has been an adviser for Rovio since 2011, reports The Guardian, adding that Rovio also bought animation studio Kombo in 2011.
Rovio CMO Peter Vesterbacka said recently at Slush 12 that Rovio wants to become “the first entertainment brand with one billion fans”, adding that this should be easy, because Coca-Cola already has that number of fans and “they’re just a soft drink.”
I don’t know about you, but I like these bold Nordic* boasts a lot. And Rovia has already shown that they can pull off some big stunts, like partnering with NASA and CERN.

Update: a commenter informed me that Finland is not part of Scandinavia (I always hated geography in school). I changed it to ‘Nordic’.
